Congratulations to Uddingston on winning the Annual Civic Game against Bothwell.

A total of 48 players took part in a spirited and friendly contest, with the home side eventually triumphing by the narrowest of margins. With both teams finishing on 6 points each, the result came down to shots scored, and Uddingston edged victory by just two shots.

After their win last year, Bothwell President Steven Gordon passed the trophy to Uddingston President James Chesnet, and both Presidents expressed their hope that this long-standing traditional fixture will continue for many years to come. Next year’s match will be hosted at Bothwell.

To round off an enjoyable day, everyone was treated to a lovely tea prepared by the Uddingston Ladies’ Committee.

History of the game

Looking back to the mid-1970s — and even earlier — the village celebrated an annual Gala Week filled with community events and festivities. At the heart of the celebrations was the parade, led by the Gala Queen and her Office Bearers, who made their way down Main Street alongside local youth organisations dressed in colourful “fancy dress” costumes.

While the parade was the principal attraction, a variety of events took place throughout the preceding week and over the gala weekend itself. These included activities such as a football tournament, entertainment shows, and, most importantly, the traditional bowling match between Uddingston and Bothwell.

Uddingston Pride played a major role in organising the week’s celebrations. Although Gala Week is sadly no longer part of the village calendar, the bowling match has proudly endured and continues to represent the friendly rivalry and strong community spirit shared by the two clubs.
